GUPS 014

Ru'Aun Gardens. If you have never witnessed light weather here before, it is the most prettiest -- and rarest -- sights of all of Tu'Lia. Like most thrilling moments in FFXI, the average waiting time for such events can be rather lengthy, so I am still debating what to do next on my list of neverending goals.

Currently, my immediate goals are to own an Ebisu Fishing Rod and complete the wonderful world of Assault missions, but it will take a while to complete either goal. I have also sold my Mercurial Kris -- surprise! -- for some pocket change, so I will definitely invest the money into something BST-related. Preferably, I would like to invest my gil into more Dynamis coins, but given the high demand of Dynamis money in general, I am still praying for either a price drop or the ability to sponsor Dynamis runs.

Other Stuff

So I have been getting closer and closer to the rank of Captain, and I must say that the last two Mercenary ranks have been unlike the previous eight. The main difference is that the First and Second Lieutenant Assaults have been much more difficult to low-man, and there is a lot less leeway on which jobs can win. This is especially true for the FL Assaults because I am constantly needing six persons per attempt, and missing one person can spell disaster. Currently, I have finished 48 of the 50 Assaults required for the Captain rank, and with any luck, I will be able to assemble a winning team for the FL Periqia Assault that is giving me trouble.

Lately, I have noticed a lot of "BST is not a good DD" posts on major forums, so I would like to throw in a few comments on the issue. Here at Snippy's Den, we find the statement to be only half-true, but do not ask Snippy about it, she will probably nip off a tail or something. To summarize my views:
  1. High-damage WSs are not everything. There have been many times where I have outranked another job simply because I was the last man standing. Moreover, a WAR or DRK who was just pummeled to death after dropping a powerful WS becomes temporarily unreliable, and he or she also receives a severe delay penalty while fighting weakened. For BSTs, having a personal tank via "Snarl" often allows us to avoid these kind of problems.
  2. A lot of BSTs possess weak melee gear relative to heavy melee jobs. If you want a fighting chance, you will need to shell out a good amount of gil: preferably on HQ gear, food, jug pets, pet items, and etc. Given our lack of natural offensive abilities, we will need every edge we can get, and an effective melee BST spends millions on his gear.
  3. A BST fights as a team: do not forget it. While a jug pet deals around a third of his or her master's damage at best, it still adds a sizable amount of DoT to one's arsenal. To further one's potential, one should cap one's "Beast Affinity" merits and start looking into more expensive jug pets, such as Funguars or Diremites.
Now I am sure this is probably handwaving things a bit for anyone who actually goes out and parses his BSTs against other DDs. Personally, I feel inadequate without a Guttler, Temperance Axe, and a better WS set, but I do believe there is hope at the end of the tunnel for exemplary melee BSTs. Until I get there and realize otherwise, I refuse to admit BST is a weak DD.

Guttler Updates

Not much news here. I dumped another 500k or so into Woodworking, and the money only raised my Woodworking skill a mere six levels, bringing it to level 75. Normally, I would be utterly broke at this point, but thanks to selling my Mercurial Kris, I still have enough gil for buying Dynamis coins -- or whatever else that might catch my eye.

Currently, I am working on Stage 2 -> 3 of my Guttler.

I have acquired:
[1/1] Leonine Axe
[1/1] Tabar
[1/1] Darksteel Tabar
[1/1] Tabarzin
[7/14] Montiont Silverpieces

Gil towards next 100-unit currency (subject to change):
[3000k/~???] Montiont Silverpiece
Status: Varies greatly on selling price
